Women in Morocco blend tradition, trend in fashion

In Morocco, the traditional outfit for both men and women is a long-hooded caftan called a jelaba. Men pull up their hoods and stroll city streets with their hands clasped behind their backs. The deliberate pace, combined with the vaguely medieval silhouette, makes nearly all jelaba-wearing Moroccan men look like they’re contemplating weighty philosophical issues — even if they’re just headed to the store to buy milk.

ANN VOGEL | A Quick Side Dish: Moroccan Couscous

The centerpiece of the meal was a b'stilla (traditionally, a savory pigeon pie encased in phyllo and sprinkled with powdered sugar). Of course, Wolff used chicken instead of pigeon. This is a time-consuming construction with spices and flavors that transported me back to the souks and cafes of Morocco where I lived for a few months three decades ago. Side dishes included a carrot salad with parsley, and a salad featuring various citrus mixed with Moroccan black olives nested in a bed of romaine.

Moroccan delights: Nibble on these tastes of Casablanca cuisine

Moroccan cuisine is typically fragrant, packed with flavour and exciting if only because there is so much happening at once on the plate -- rather like the country itself. Located on the northwest coast of Africa, Morocco has varied topography, with the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the arid Sahara Desert to the south and east. Casablanca is its major city, on the country's coast. Meandering north to south are mountain ranges mostly populated by the indigenous Berbers.

Berbers claim their rights in ’Arab’ Morocco

Some years ago, a visitor to the Moroccan capital Rabat was unlikely to be reminded of the nation’s Amazigh (Berber) component by other than touristic details such as water sellers in colorful costumes, with their brass cups and jangling bells. Today, however, researchers interested in the Amazigh people can visit the imposing building housing the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture (IRCAM) in a sign that the authorities’ traditional lack of interest is giving way to a more inclusive attitude.

Created in 1994, the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music offered immediately an innovative concept: to gather in a largely ecumenical perspective the great musical traditions of the sacred, the spiritual music and the world music. At that time, the great majority of Festivals of Sacred music used to offer concerts focused on the Western musical traditions, and the concept as such was non-existent in the East and in the Arab world.
